Washington, DC
Townhouse renovation in Stanton Park, Capitol Hill Historic District featuring historic window restoration, slate roofing, Juliet balconies, and full interior modernization with ADA accessibility. Completed by MWA in Fall 2020.

Located in Washington, DC’s Capitol Hill Historic District, this three-story townhouse with cellar underwent a full renovation to meet the needs of modern living while preserving its historic charm. MWA (Maurice Walters Architect) worked in collaboration with the DC Historic Preservation Office and The L’Enfant Trust to gain approval for all exterior improvements.

The renovation included the restoration of the original street-facing historic windows and the replacement of fiberglass shingles with authentic slate roofing and copper flashing, all in keeping with the building’s historic character. The rear façade was redesigned to create a balanced, symmetrical composition and now includes two elegant Juliet balconies on the second floor.

The interior was completely reimagined and updated, with reconfigured layouts and all-new mechanical, electrical, lighting, and HVAC systems. The first floor was designed for ADA accessibility, ensuring comfort and usability for all.

Completed in Fall 2020, this Stanton Park townhouse is a prime example of sensitive historic renovation that brings a traditional home into the 21st century without compromising its architectural legacy.
